Social Networking Sites
Social Networking sites are a combination of blogs, wikis, and chat rooms. As per Steve Hargadon, there are seven things that educators can do: Learn about web 2.0, lurk. particiapte, Digest the thought, teach content production, make education a public discussion, and help build the new playbook. Social networking sites affect education in different ways by creating diverse learning communities. As educators we should find a way to harness this power and allow our students to continue to use this tool to enhance their education and strive to be the students of tomorrow; today.
Wiki
According to the Science of Spectroscopy, a wiki is "a combination of a web site and a Word Document". (Blogs in Education, n.d.) Wikis can be password protected and their true power lies in the ability to edit and keep logs of older verisons when revised. This will allow educators to compare older versions of the Wiki and correct it if necessary. Wikis affect education by increasing the three C's: Communicate, Collaborate, and Coordinate between, students and teachers. Students are able to work collaboratively by engaging in cooperative work and sharing ideas. Many educators are using wikis to create e-portfolios and classroom websites without having to learn a different programming languages, such as: html, java script, asp, asp.net or visual basic. The benefit that we as educators gain is that we don't have to waste time by having to teach these languages and get down to the point of the lesson.
Blogs
Another web 2.0 tool that is used to communicate are known as blogs. According to Wikipedia a " blog is a website where entires are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order" (Blog, nd., para. 1). There are different types of blogs and they are named by how it is delevered to its audience; by the type of media that is being used. Video enhanced blogs are known as vlogs, link enhanced blogs are called linklogs, and a site that contains porfolio sketches is called a sketchlog. Educators are using blogs to challenge students by offering tehcnology-infused experiences that will allow them to experiment and learn critical thinking skills by "writing reflectivce journals, assignments submission and review, allow dialogue for group work, create e-porfolios, and allow students to share course related materials" (Blogs in Educaiton, p. 1).
